I suppose I should have included this on my list of picture books for older readers since reading this book requires a certain level of sophistication on the part of the reader. What I really love about it, though, is that it never goes for easy answers. Hemings is left with questions about his father that will never be answered, and so are we. Let it never be said that Jakobsen is not meticulous in her renderings.

Mixed Genre Example Two: A writer decides to compose a family history, using pictures and documents from her family albums. But sometimes her story veers into fiction. Again, is this an essay? A short story? If half of the story is made-up, but half is very obviously true, it might be best called mixed genre. NOTE: Sometimes the term mixed genre is defined in terms of the novel or book.
